Hi Briony

We have a Bath chair on display in the Royal Pump Room Museum(image
attached). These chairs were hired out to visitors. In style this chair
probably dates to the mid 19th century. However, the owner of this
chair, a Mr Robinson only retired in 1931. The chairs were licensed and
I think they probably went on hiring out the same chairs for a long
time. The hut where the chairmen used to hang out and wait for hires is
still there near Betty's.

We also have a cartoon illustration in the art collection dating from
the 1890s, which shows people using another sort of bath chair, which
could be hired. These had a rider who cycled along, rather than the push
and pull chairs. I thing it is these latter chairs that could take
people out of Harrogate and further afield. (image attached).
