Dear TDM and parking professional:

 

The Transportation Research Board (TRB) is now accepting research papers 
for presentation at the TRB Annual Meeting to be held in Washington, DC in 
January 2009.  On behalf of the TDM Committee (ABE50) and its Joint 
Parking Subcommittee (ABE50-1), I encourage you to submit a paper for 
consideration and review.

 

Papers are welcome on all TDM and parking topics, but the spotlight theme 
of the 2009 Meeting will be Transportation, Energy, and Climate Change, 
thus we are particularly interested in papers relating to the involvement 
of TDM and parking strategies in addressing climate change.  

 

Topics that have been identified of special interest to the Committee 
include:

 

TDM and climate change

·         Successful regional TDM applications in addressing climate change

·         Performance indicators and tools to measure TDM contribution to 
addressing climate change

·         Effective approaches and messages to convey TDM’s potential 
climate change contribution to policy makers and travelers

 

Measuring and evaluating TDM program benefits

·         Standardization of TDM evaluation techniques and tools and 
development of regional / national impact estimation factors

·         Methods to compare benefits/costs of TDM to benefits/costs of 
build strategies, new transit

·         Setting regional expectations for TDM – performance indicators/ 
realistic targets

·         Performance indicators and tools to assess TDM strategies’ 
impacts on the transportation system, for example, mapping geographic 
distribution of vehicle trips and VMT reduced 

 

Integrating TDM into long-range planning and land development

·         Best practices on TDM applications in long-range plans, land use 
plans/Smart Growth

·         Market benefits of TDM to developers/property owners and 
economic value of TDM to community development, revitalization

 

Communication and Marketing

·         Performance indicators and methods to estimate effectiveness of 
TDM marketing 

·         Impact of individual travel impact marketing on travel decisions 
(e.g., Travel Blending)

·         Methods and performance indicators to communicate TDM benefits 
to non-technical audiences and to funders

 

New TDM Applications

·         Role of TDM in security/ emergency response (telework, 
alternative work hours, rideshare) 

·         TDM applications for tourism, special events 

·         TDM strategies for seniors/elderly (Senior pool, volunteer 
driving services) 

 

Parking 

·         The contribution of parking to demand management

·         Empirical studies of parking management best practices

·         Impact of parking pricing on demand and local economic 
development

·         Parking and intermodality / park & ride

·         Acceptability of parking management strategies

 

Papers for the 2009 Annual Meeting must be submitted electronically at the 
following website: http://trb.org/ by the applicable deadline shown 
below.  This website also provides additional “Information for Authors” on 
the acceptable format for paper submittals.

 

Note that TRB has dual paper submittal deadlines for the 2009 Annual 
Meeting: Papers in non-PDF format must be submitted prior to midnight 
Monday, July 27, 2008; Papers in PDF format must be submitted prior to 
midnight Friday, August 1, 2008. 

 

When submitting the paper with a TDM / parking focus, please designate 
your preference that it be reviewed by the Committee on TDM, ABE50.  This 
will ensure it is assigned to the TDM Committee.
