If I remember correctly, this routine updates the estimates of the Gaussians, 
and is part of spm_segment.m.  In SPM5, spm_segment.m is not actually used.  
Take a look at spm_preproc.m, which is described in:

J. Ashburner and K.J. Friston. Unified segmentation. NeuroImage, 26:839-851, 
2005.
