The Association of African Universities, the Commonwealth Association of
Polytechnics in Africa and the Africa Unit, funded by Department for
Innovation, Universities & Skills and based at the Association of
Commonwealth Universities are working in collaboration with Leeds
Metropolitan University to deliver this two part international
conference. The first part will be hosted by Leeds Metropolitan
University at the prestigious Headingley Campus in the United Kingdom
from 17th - 19th July, 2008 and the second part will take place in
November in Africa.

This international conference provides a unique opportunity to promote a
deeper understanding of diversities of Higher Education practices that
are taking place in Africa, the UK and other parts of the world. Through
the conference we aim to question the perceptions about the role and
contribution of Higher Education in society and celebrate good practice
partnerships between Higher Education Institutions across the world. The
conference will also challenge the role of Higher Education Institutions
in Africa, the UK and other parts of the world to identify creative
responses to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for
Africa.

To ensure these objectives are achieved four interactive sessions will
take place during the conference, which will explore and discuss issues
relating to; Pedagogy in Higher Education, Widening Participation,
Developing Institutions & their staff and Policy and strategies for
developing Further and Higher Education in Africa. Full details of these
can be found on the left hand side of this page. The conference will
provide excellent networking opportunities during sessions, breakfast
mornings and a gala dinner. It aims to create a forum for debate and
show that sustainable and vibrant partnerships with tertiary educations
institutions in Africa are critical to accelerated improvement of
economic growth, political and social justice.

At the end of the conference we aim to generate a set of principles to
guide establishment and implementation of partnerships with examples of
good practice, a book containing edited collections of articles and the
launching of the Africa Diaspora and UK Professionals register which
will be hosted by Leeds Metropolitan University.

Best wishes
