The Modelling and Economics Unit has three main areas of work:

1. Estimating the current health and economic burden of diseases.

2. Evaluating the health and economic impact of interventions to control infectious diseases.

3. Using data and models to improve our basic understanding of the epidemiology of infectious diseases.

In addition, the Unit provides input into the design and analysis of epidemiological and surveillance programmes and has a remit to provide training in its core areas.

Applications are now invited for a three-year funded PhD studentship in “Developing serotype-specific models of the transmission of pneumococcal carriage and the effect of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines on disease in the UK”. The student will be supervised by Dr. Yoon H. Choi and Prof John Edmunds (HPA) and Professor Chris Robertson (Strathclyde University)

Candidates should possess a higher degree in mathematics, statistics, science or other discipline with a strong analytical component.  Experience of programming mathematical models in C++ is desirable.

Further details about the project are available at https://www.stams.strath.ac.uk/vacancies/student/Pneumo_PhD_project_description.pdf and information about pneumococcal disease at http://www.hpa.org.uk/webw/HPAweb&HPAwebStandard/HPAweb_C/1195733824746?p=1160994272869.

The award will be for three years full-time, and will cover the EU student fees and a tax-free stipend of £15,077 per annum including London allowance.

The successful candidate will be registered for a PhD in the Department of Statistics and Modelling Science at Strathclyde University, Glasgow. (www.stams.strath.ac.uk)
