Dear Colleagues,

I hope that some of you had a good break over the half term and that you are
now feeling ready for some fresh challenges.

I wanted to remind you about the ERTMF forum on June 12th at N.Herts
College. We still have quite a few spaces left to fill and, since I first
emailed you, we have been fortunate in adding some fresh speakers. In
addition to Andy Ostcliffe fro Salford Softrware we also have James Farnhill
from the JISC Innovations team who has been specifically charged with
developing guidance for FE and HE on this increasingly important subject. We
will also be joined by Matt Greening who has recently taken over
responsibility for Helpdesk Management at N. Herts College. N. Herts has one
of the largest IT Teams in the Region and has a number of remote campuses so
it will be interesting to hear how they manage this. It would be good to
contrast this with Helpdesk provision from a small IT Team, i.e. less than
five. If any of you feel you would like to contribute a presentation on
this, there is still a spare slot. James Farnhill's podcast on Identity
Management is available at:

Secondly, I need to remind you all yet again about Federated Access
Management. I have been given a list of institutions which are 'at risk' and
asked to contact you directly to urge upon you and your SMTs the need to
complete this work. Mark Williams from the JISC will be joining us on the
11th and will be happy to provide an update. Because of the growing urgency
of this issue we have extended an invitation to the meeting to Learning
Resources Managers, as it probably needs a combined approach. If your
Institution has not yet sent off the joining letter which is available at:

http://www.ukfederation.org.uk/content/Documents/LetterofApplication

It needs to do so PDQ. After the letter has been sent off, a Request for
further information about your Institution will be sent by JANET(UK), who
are managing the process. The worry is that if this is left too late, there
will be nobody at the College to deal with it!

Robert Prabucki has told me that he will be on holiday on the date of the
meeting but has offered to try and find a substitute, particularly to bring
us up to date on JANET Talk developments. Whilst we wish him well on his
well-earned vacation, I am sure his engaging style will be much missed.

All in all, I do hope those of you who have not yet signed up for the
meeting will feel motivated to do so. The plenary at the end of the meeting
is meant to provide an opportunity for delegates to tell Stephen Tanner and
myself what changes they would like to see made in the forum. At the moment
we are planning a joint ERTMF, and e:Learning forum for October in which one
of the themes could be Sustainable IT, and another could be mobile computing
which is a hot issue for ACL and Work-based Learning. This would also be a
good chance to debate the pros and cons of thin client computing and to
review wireless developments.

The booking form for the ERTMF conference on June 12th is at:

Kindest Regards,

Thomas
