Speaking as we were of dating a stone, can anyone tell me how I can tell if a plain ‘architectural’ (i.e. largely undecorated) font in a parish church is ‘Norman’ or ‘Saxon’?  The site in question can be traced back to the C14, but it is reputed to be ‘on a C12 site’.  There is no mention of a church here in Domesday (but then it is very poor for Lancashire). 

 

A Google search results in pictures of both decorated and plain fonts, and some of each are Norman and some are Saxon, with nary a clue as to why in most cases …
