Sorry it it sounds a bit like a Friday Afternoon answer, but could it just mean that it got there by the use of explosives? (T.N.T. moved it) I suppose you would then have to wonder where it was 'MVD' from - is there a quarry face nearby? - or was it 'MVD' away from the footpath ... A stone on the edge of Ullswater lake has an inscription 'TNT MVD IT'. The stone is large, on its own and a few feet from the waterline adjacent to the footpath. I don't suppose anyone has any ideas as to what it might mean? It isn't on an old or existing parish, district or county boundary and the family name of the landowner doesn't correlate either. It may well be some old graffiti, but the inscription seems too well engraved and uniform for that. If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them!
