Dear Amanda and all

In the past we have bought shoes for our own use (when working in Medieval
costume) from Morgan Hubbard trading as Plantagent Shoes
www.plantaqenetshoes.freeserve.co.uk
His work is good and hardwearing, again, though, not cheap, but he does use
he correct types of alum tanned leathers, rather than the modern shiny
chrome tanned hides used by the cheaper suppliers.

I hear good things about Sarah Juniper - she only lives a couple of miles
from us, but have never managed to meet her or place an order with her! If
anyone does use her, please pass on my details! She specialises in hard
soled shoes - hence Roman and post-Medieval. Morgan Hubbard's shoes are made
by a former modern shoe-maker and are more turn welted than true turned
shoes, very good nevertheless.

For real museum quality reconstructions try contacting Marquita and Serge
Volken. They run Gentlecraft, a private shoe museum based in Lausanne,
Switzerland (Tel: 0041 21 312067). Marquita is originally from the U.S. so
she speaks English. They make perfect shoes and Marquita even managed to
source some tawed goatskin she had left over from a project for help with
the Sutton Hoo lyre bag that I made last year.

And may I humbly add that Paul and I make the occasional turned shoes and
always use alum tanned hides or whatever the job needs.

Best wishes

Dear Amanda and other GEM readers

I've had shoes made recently for family learning collections by Pilgrim
Shoes (http://www.pilgrimshoes.co.uk/) and Sarah Juniper
(http://www.sarahjuniper.co.uk/). The latter was slightly better in terms
of authentic replicas but much more expensive. The former was ideal for
shoes to be worn by children in a costume set - just ?20 for a size 1 pair
of slashed leather latchet shoes if I remember.

  Best wishes

    Hi all,

Has anyone used a good, reliable historical shoe maker?

We have a medieval shoe we'd like a replica making of for display and
also possibly a pair for eduaction.

    Thanks ,
    Amanda
