Scholarship IS admirable...  i suppose... but pedants so often seem threatened by original thought... whereas true scholars are given pause.
Whatever else, L-S had the grace and imagination to inspire folks from many disciplines - especially in the arts. What happens when metaphors are put aside is that the charm is bled from language and the corpses of wild thoughts and provocative thinkers get pecked to death by the pedants.
