Call for Proposals:

Drawing in the Digital 2008

The 2nd ‘Drawing in the Digital’ one day-symposium is set to open the 5th Flip Animation Festival* in Wolverhampton UK, 6th - 8th November.  This year the symposium continues highlighting the changing digital environment and will focus on core themes in animation in order to debate their importance. Flip celebrates Animation in all its complexity with screenings and industry panels, talks and presentations from established commercial studios and independent animators.  Wolverhampton is also host to this year’s CGAMES* conference, running concurrently with Flip. The symposium seeks to examine the nature of Animation and its proliferation through a mix of keynote speakers animators and artists, and now calls for proposals to present under the following themes:

New possibilities for sound and vision in the constructed animated image

Animation as a centrifuge through which many cultural transactions are increasingly
      transformed.

     The digital effect.

     Writing for Animation

Animation as the new "lingua franca" that is increasingly articulated due to technological
      advance.

The dominance of CGI and the hyper-real - how the tools for reality are now embedded.

The digital animated object as mediator for all cultural exchange.

The symposium aims to assemble key practitioners and academics in the field of animation across a wide range of current critical practice. This year, the discussion is expanding to include proposals from animators, researchers, artists, scientists, theorists and practitioners who cross boundaries between disciplines, alongside those who combine the traditional with new animated possibilities.  We welcome responses for presentations in a range of forms to include film, inter-medial work and academic papers. All contributions will be refereed by an international panel and the DID2 proceedings will be published with an ISBN.
