[Apologies for yet another advert - but I think this one - on behalf of Tangerine Press - is worth it)

The first book of William Wantling's poems for over 30 years is now available from Tangerine Press.

William Wantling (1933-1974) was one of the most original and exciting US poets to emerge from the 1960s mimeo revolution. His use of different poetic forms (avant-garde, sonnet, haiku) and raw subject matter convinced Walter Lowenfels to declare Wantling "the best poet of his age." The Korean war, heroin addiction and time spent in San Quentin all fell under Wantling's unique gaze. These were experiences he lived, wrote about and for which he is best known. But this was not the whole story. Wantling also wrote many touching and provocative poems about love won and lost, of alienation in a hostile world - timeless themes that strike a chord with the modern reader. Only In The Sun selects poetry from early, rare pamphlets such as Down, Off & Out, Heroin Haikus and Head First, right through to 10,000 r.p.m. & Digging it, Yeah! and 7 on Style. Also there is an extract from Young and Tender, Wantling's only completed novel, published in 1969. Tangerine Press is proud to reprint these poems for the first time in book form since their original publication some 40 years ago. Wantling scholar Kevin Jones offers an insightful, approachable introduction to this unjustly neglected writer, a man who's life was as extraordinary and surprising as the words he committed to paper.
