In actual fact, I've spotted three archivists on the list - one LVO and two MBEs. The library sector doesn't do much better, with an MVO and four MBEs.

As to my name, it's an old joke, one I've been hearing since primary school...

Dear all

Here's one professional issue relating to all this...

Whether or not one is a royalist or a republican, and despite a certain
amount of cynicism, the honours system is the only means we have in the
UK of publically recognising outstanding work in whichever sector.

It's perhaps regretable therefore that an admittedly cursory review of
the list of honours granted on Saturday reveals an apparent lack of
people connected with our sector. There's the usual crop of folk
involved with museums, both professionals and volunteers, and at least
three librarians. But (and apologies if I've missed anyone) I can't see
any archivists record managers or conservators.

A few eminent colleagues have been honoured over the last few years, but
if the number of OBEs granted were a rough measure of how the State
regarded us, we're not doing very well!

As the archive sector trys to reposition itself in forthcoming
challenging times, awareness of what we do by policy makers might be
helped if there was a more co-ordinated effort to nominate for honours
long-serving, eminent colleagues who have genuinely impacted on the
profession and the wider multi-faceted research community.

It's not much, but it couldn't hurt.

And if anyone think's "Taylor's after a gong"...well I'm waiting til
they revive hereditary dukedoms...

Cheers

Martin

Can I suggest that taunts between republicans and royalists are posted
to a
more appropriate list please?
