This discussion does have some relevance to archives in Australia, not least because each State and Territory celebrates the Queens birthday on a different day, and this, of course, affects the opening hours of archival institutions. To be honest I am not quite sure which day we celebrate the Queens Birthday in Western Australia, but I have a sense it is the last weekend in September. And I have a sense that the choice of this weekend is that there is no point in having a long weekend in June as for us it is the middle of winter, and we have wonderful storms (100kph to be precise last weekend), and so the rural tourism industry would not benefit from a long weekend at this time. But in other states and territories with different histories, varying degrees of adherence to marking such historic days more precisely, and with different climatic zones, their archival institutions close on a Monday. These closures are often entirely unknown to people outside that State, and they have the audacity to come up with the excuse that it was the Queens Birthday. I just hope that Brenda (that is what she is called isn't she?) enjoys as many birthdays as her Commonwealth and Dominions allow, and that we archivists learn to either mark the days with reverence or resistence (but which republican goes to work by choice on that day?) or wonder why it is that we have the day off work on yet another Monday and perhaps delve into the archives to find out why! Whilst I quite agree about the relevance of this latest string. However it does demonstrate our ability to allow freedom of speech and discussion at any level and it is no more irrelevant than heritage walks around London markets, discussions about foreign visa regulations in the UK to mention but two of the discussions we have had on the this list serve. I for one would support the right of anyone to express their views freely but would plead that it at least has some direct relevance to the purpose of the medium through which you express those views namely in this case Archives / Records Management. It also distresses me that some really important issues seem to get less attention than the lighted hearted entries Finally on the particular issue we at least have a choice whether we show an interest or totally ignore it. Is any of this string relevant or even useful in some other way? It is highly unlikely that a rabid royalist (hello James!) or a foaming at the mouth republican is going to have their minds changed by something said by the other side on this discussion board. ________________________________ From: Archivists, conservators and records managers. Dear Paul, Why can't you get on in peace with being a republican even on that one day of the year? Nobody forces you to stand up and sing the National Anthem or indeed to acknowledge in any way that it is the Queen's official birthday. It's much easier to ignore, if you feel so inclined, than, for example, the world cup final. As a royalist with a complete lack of interest in football, I think I have far more to feel aggrieved about - if I felt so inclined!
