I have been asked to post this on Allstat. Enquiries should go to the address at the end of this notice and not to me. Colin Aitken. --------------------------------------------- Research Fellow Electronic and Electrical Engineering (FIXED TERM UNTIL 31 JULY 2009) SALARY £27,466 - £30,913 UNIVERSITY OF STRATHCLYDE Closing date: Monday 21 July 2008 Applications are invited for the fixed-term post of Research Fellow, based in the Institute for Energy and Environment at the University of Strathclyde, for Modelling of the Wind Resource for Generation of Electricity in Britain. The successful candidate will join a significant collaboration between the University of Strathclyde, the University of Manchester and Imperial College known as the Centre for Sustainable Electricity and Distributed Generation (SEDG) and supported by the UK government department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) and a Steering Group comprising representatives of the UK electricity supply industry and government. Access to real, accurate and representative wind power data sets of appropriate resolution and extent (geographical and historical duration) is a critical enabler for development of large penetrations of wind generation in the GB electricity system. The Research Fellow on this project will work with colleagues at Strathclyde, the other institutions involved in the SEDG Centre and key power sector actors to collate the required raw data sets and develop appropriate statistical representations of wind speeds and models of the wind to electric power conversion that can enable the assessment of generation resources and the investigation of issues around the development of the electricity network infrastructure, security of supply and operation of the power system. The successful candidate will have: • expertise in use of computing facilities for analysis and management of large sets of data; • good general knowledge of and experience in application of statistics. They should have, or expect to have gained by the time of the appointment, a PhD in a numerical subject and have been successful in publishing research in a peer-reviewed English language international journal. They should also have the ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing. Ideally, the candidate would also have experience in one or more of the following: • use of auto-regression models and/or artificial neural networks; • wind, climate or other atmospheric modelling; • wind farm energy conversion characteristics; • current issues in the electricity supply industry in the UK or Europe; • computer programming – Java, C/C++ or Fortran; • development of browser-accessed databases; • leadership of research and liaison with external clients. The candidate should also welcome the opportunity to contribute to the wider activities of the research group. The duration of the appointment is 1 year and the starting salary will be dependent on the skills and experience of the successful candidate. The starting date should ideally be no later than August 2008. Subsequent opportunities are also expected to arise.
