Applications are invited from Statisticians for membership of the Royal Free Hospital and Medical School Research Ethics Committee A Research Ethics Committee (REC) is an independent committee, whose task is to consider the ethics of proposed research projects involving NHS staff and patients, their tissue, or information about them. Medical research cannot proceed without the ethical opinion of a REC. The key duty of a REC is to protect the interests of research participants. The Royal Free Hospital and Medical School REC meets monthly, on the third Wednesday of each month, for approximately two hours at the Royal Free Hospital, Hampstead, London NW3. Members are expected to give adequate time for preparation prior to meetings and to attend, as a minimum, a one day training event each year. There is no remuneration but expenses are paid. I am presently the statistician member of the committee but am resigning due to other commitments. The committee needs to appoint a replacement with effect from October 2008. A short interview will be arranged for applicants and training will be provided.
