MLA Corporate Plan 2008 to 2011
MLA Corporate Plan 2008 to 2011 sets out our aspirations for the sector and our role in achieving them. It gives an overview of the far-reaching reorganisation designed to enable a ‘new MLA’ to emerge stronger and braver: to win a reputation for effectiveness at a national level; to be strong in the English regions; and to acquire capacities that extend both our national and international relationships.

Culture minister defers export of rare portrait of pioneering maritime chartmaker
Culture Minister, Margaret Hodge, has placed a temporary export bar on a rare likeness of Alexander Dalrymple, the first Hydrographer to the Admiralty. A mariner and chartmaker, Dalrymple compiled over a thousand nautical charts mapping many of Britain’s trade routes for the first time, invented the concept of the Admiralty Chart and made an enormous contribution to the safety of shipping. This will provide a last chance to raise the money to keep the portrait in the United Kingdom.

Scarce Skills, Weak Standards: The Future of Our Built Heritage
Over two-thirds of building work on pre-1919 buildings is being carried out by people without the right skills and materials. Likewise of the half million architects, engineers, surveyors, conservation officers and other professionals working in the UK, only 507 are building conservation-accredited. These are the stark findings of two reports just published by the National Heritage Training Group (NHTG) revealing the scale of our challenge in preserving our built heritage.
