A PhD position in Theoretical/Experimental Surface Science is available at the Department of Chemistry, University of Reading, UK. The PhD project entitled: “A combined theoretical and experimental approach for determining the arrangement of molecules at bio-inorganic interfaces” is in the field of computational chemistry with some involvement in experiments. The primary objective is to design, test and develop a novel combined experimental and theoretical approach for investigating the adsorption of bio-relevant molecules at interfaces. The new methodology will allow a more detailed interpretation of data from state-of-the-art synchrotron-based experiments for the investigation of the surface environment of adsorbed bio-molecules. The project will be carried out under the supervision of Dr David Nutt and Dr Georg Held and will involve running and modifying existing program packages for molecular modelling. Applicants should have a strong background in Physical Chemistry or Physics and an interest in computer programming (training will be provided). EU and UK candidates holding or expecting 1st class or 2i degrees or equivalent in Chemistry, Physics or related subjects are invited to apply before 15th May 2008. The PhD studentship is available from 1st October 2008 in the Department of Chemistry. Funding is provided by the University of Reading Research Endowment Trust Fund, which pays fees, a tax free stipend and an annual Reading University Postgraduate Research Support Award for conferences, travel and training.
