Television Without Borders: Transfers, Translations and Transnational
Exchange

An International Conference at the University of Reading, 27-29 June 2008

In the last few years, critics have proclaimed the end of television, but
television has responded to challenges relatively quickly. Globalisation has
increased the revenues of many national broadcasting institutions, created
new export markets and fostered international co-productions, while digital
technologies have been adapted and exploited to entice those audiences back
that appeared to turn to other media, most notably the internet. The
conference will explore some of these issues with papers investigating, for
example, the role of YouTube and similar sites for the dissemination of
foreign, and in particular, American product. Some speakers will discuss
economic issues at stake in relation to transnational television, whilst
others will investigate television in the age of globalisation by examining
cultural questions such as language or music. Papers will analyse television
and other media in the UK and continental Europe, New Zealand, Australia,
Asia, and the Americas.

Workshops and Other Events:

The conference will host a book event where Dr Andreas Fickers and Prof.
Jonathan Bignell will introduce their new edited collection A European
Television History, to be published in Autumn 2008 by Blackwell, New York.
Written with international colleagues in the European Television History
Network, the book is the first truly comparative history of television in
Europe. At the conference, Bignell and Fickers will discuss some of the
methodological challenges of comparative television history and how the book
has addressed them.

There will also be a workshop on ‘Making Lists: Developing Catalogues to
Study Television’ where academics currently attempting to expand the canon
by compiling lists of specific television genres or production contexts will
discuss their work and its usefulness for our subject. Scholars include Dr
Pat Holland (University of Bournemouth), Dr Lez Cooke (Manchester
Metropolitan University), Dr Julia Hallam (University of Liverpool) and Dr
Elke Weissmann (University of Reading).
