Globalisation has increased the revenues of many national broadcasting institutions, created new export markets and fostered international co-productions, while digital technologies have been adapted and exploited to entice those audiences back that appeared to turn to other media, most notably the internet. The conference will explore some of these issues with papers investigating, for example, the role of YouTube and similar sites for the dissemination of foreign, and in particular, American product. Some speakers will discuss economic issues at stake in relation to transnational television, whilst others will investigate television in the age of globalisation by examining cultural questions such as language or music. Papers will analyse television and other media in the UK and continental Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Asia, and the Americas. Confirmed Speakers: * Prof. Michele Hilmes, University of Wisconsin, Madison * Prof. Jeffrey Miller, Augustana College * Dr Stephanie Marriott, University of Stirling * Prof. Jonathan Bignell, University of Reading Other confirmed speakers include: Dr Cathy Johnson, Royal Holloway, University of London, UK Prof. John Sinclair, University of Melbourne, Australia Prof. Jeanette Steemers, University of Westminster, UK Prof. Richard Kilborn, University of Stirling, UK Prof. Lothar Mikos, University Potsdam-Babelsberg, Germany Dr. Paul Rixon, Roehampton University, UK Dr. Darrell Newton, Salisbury University, USA Prof. Sonje De Leeuw, Utrecht University, Netherlands Prof. Jason Jacobs, University of Queensland, Australia Prof. Graeme Turner, University of Queensland, Australia Dr Andreas Fickers, Maastricht University, Netherlands Workshops and Other Events: The conference will host a book event where Dr Andreas Fickers and Prof. Jonathan Bignell will introduce their new edited collection A European Television History, to be published in Autumn 2008 by Blackwell, New York. At the conference, Bignell and Fickers will discuss some of the methodological challenges of comparative television history and how the book has addressed them.
