If it's not too late to add my tuppence-worth: I am in the fortunate
position of net gain in ILLs from the list - I have only supplied one, was
too slow to supply one or two more (can't believe how fast some of these
requests are filled) and had help getting hold of some phenomenally old and
obscure foreign language articles*. I don't mind properly identified List
ILL requests as they take moments to sift out: as others have noted, it's
identifying them that can be an issue. As for other items of interest, I'm
sure they will come around in due course and lively debate will ensue.

*By the way, if anyone wants the summary of useful sources for French or
German articles that I compiled after my request last year, just ask. I've
sent it to a couple of other librarians looking for articles, so all those
suggestions have come in useful for more than one person. Thanks to
everyone who suggested institutions to contact.

Subject: Splitting the list to separate out ILL requests?

It may be the time to split the list up to distinguish between ILL messages
and all of the other messages. I have been taking soundings from other
colleagues both in and out of UHMLG. Lis-medical is the open list for UHMLG
although this fact might be new to some listers. My observation is from the
p.o.v. of being the list owner for the UHMLG lists and also being an
ordinary member of this list too.

My suggestion would be to set up a list called lis-medical-ill (or should
that be lis-medic-ill!) for the ILL posters. In this way, lis-medical
wouldn't be so off-putting for those people who don't want to see ILL
postings. In between the ILL requests (which are incredibly important, so
I'm not knocking them at all) there are nuggets of gold which sometimes get
lost.

Lis-medical is quiet these days because of the other ways in which people
communicate and also because most of the hectic activity seems to be on any
list talking about Search 2.0! However, it still has a bright future, as
long as we don't clog it up.

What do people think?
