Call for papers: Forced displacement of civilian population in Europe 1939-1947

In 1939, Germany and Italy decided upon transferring German- and Ladin-speaking populations from South-Tyrol to the Third Reich. In order to commemorate the seventieth anniversary of the exodus, the bi-lingual history journal “Storia e regione / Geschichte und Region” (Bolzano) will devote a special issue to the topic of forced population displacements in Europe during and shortly after the Second World War. The case of South-Tyrol will be the starting point for a comparison of similar cases that occurred in Europe during the period 1939-1947. We invite scholars to send abstracts covering any test case dealing with Europe during the above-mentioned time-period. Among possible related themes, we include Nazi and Fascist ethno-policies (including the case of Italian colonial possessions) as well as the Eastern European countries’ policies towards their German and Italian minorities shortly after the end of the Second World War.

Your abstract must not exceed 3,000 characters (spaces not included). Please, join a short CV and send it (by email or regular mail) before 29 August 2008. By January 2009, a workshop will be organised in Bolzano. The languages of the workshop will be German, Italian and English. The publication of the special issue of the review is scheduled for mid-2009. The editors will contact a UK or American publisher for an English edition of the articles previously published in “Storia e regione / Geschichte und Region”.
