italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies ‘Reading Capital I, Alchemically’ Karen Pinkus, University of Southern California 15 May 2008 5:30 pm, Chowen Lecture Theatre Karen Pinkus will deliver a lecture entitled ‘Reading Capital I, Alchemically’ on Thursday, 15 May, 2008 in the Chowen Lecture Theatre at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School, University of Sussex, Falmer. The lecture will begin at 5:30pm. Keston Sutherland, a lecturer in the English Department, will offer a response to Professor Pinkus’s talk. Karen Pinkus is Professor of Italian, French, and Comparative Literature at the University of Southern California. Her distinguished publications range across an array of historical periods and include Bodily Regimes: Italian Advertising Under Fascism (Minnesota, 1995), Picturing Silence: Emblem, Language, Counter-Reformation Materiality, (Michigan, 1996), and The Montesi Scandal, The Death of Wilma Montesi and the Birth of the Paparazzi in Fellini's Rome (Chicago, 2003). She is also the author of numerous articles and a translator, most notably, of Giorgio Agamben’s Language and Death (with Michael Hardt). Her talk comes out of her new monograph Alchemical Mercury: A Theory of Ambivalence, which explores the subject of alchemy from the Middle Ages to Karl Marx (the subject of this talk) to the present day. Her work is profoundly interdisciplinary and comparatist. This event is sponsored by the Sussex Centre for Visual Fields and constitutes one of a series of events celebrating the inauguration of this new interdisciplinary research centre.
