Karen Pinkus will deliver a lecture entitled ‘Reading Capital I,
Alchemically’ on Thursday, 15 May, 2008 in the Chowen Lecture Theatre at
the Brighton and Sussex Medical School, University of Sussex, Falmer.
The lecture will begin at 5:30pm. Keston Sutherland, a lecturer in the
English Department, will offer a response to Professor Pinkus’s talk.

Karen Pinkus is Professor of Italian, French, and Comparative Literature
at the University of Southern California. Her distinguished publications
range across an array of historical periods and include Bodily Regimes:
Italian Advertising Under Fascism (Minnesota, 1995), Picturing Silence:
Emblem, Language, Counter-Reformation Materiality, (Michigan, 1996), and
The Montesi Scandal, The Death of Wilma Montesi and the Birth of the
Paparazzi in Fellini's Rome (Chicago, 2003). She is also the author of
numerous articles and a translator, most notably, of Giorgio Agamben’s
Language and Death (with Michael Hardt).

Her talk comes out of her new monograph Alchemical Mercury: A Theory of
Ambivalence, which explores the subject of alchemy from the Middle Ages
to Karl Marx (the subject of this talk) to the present day. Her work is
profoundly interdisciplinary and comparatist.

This event is sponsored by the Sussex Centre for Visual Fields and
constitutes one of a series of events celebrating the inauguration of
this new interdisciplinary research centre.

An reception will follow the lecture.

All are welcome.
