Announcing: California Italian Studies

California Italian Studies (CIS) is a new digital, peer-reviewed scholarly
journal created by the Italian Studies Multi-Campus Research Group (ISMRG)
of the University of California (UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, UC Santa
Barbara, UCLA, and UC San Diego campuses). This journal will be published
annually online, through the California Digital Library, and will be managed
by the CIS Editorial Board.

CIS is committed to publishing in a timely manner the finest, the most
innovative, and the most potentially influential scholarly work being done
internationally in the field of Italian Studies, or on topics related to
Italy in any discipline, from the Middle Ages to the present. Relevant
disciplines include: medieval, early modern, modern, and contemporary
studies, visual studies, history of art and architecture, cultural and
political geography, environmental studies, philosophy, religious studies,
history of science, musicology, literary studies, film, media and new media
studies, theater and performance studies, gender studies, political science,
anthropology, sociology, migration and diaspora studies, classical studies,
rhetoric, linguistics, ethnography and popular culture studies, and any
other cross-disciplinary and comparative field of inquiry.

CIS seeks contributions which meet one or more of the following criteria:
interdisciplinarity; comparativity; criticality.   Essays should be of
interest to a broad spectrum of scholars in and outside of Italian Studies.
Contributions that make the best and most creative use of the digital format
are especially encouraged.

Each issue of CIS will be thematic, with contributions focusing on a single
question or subject of broad interdisciplinary interest, but submissions on
other topics, as long as they are consistent with the general profile and
mission of CIS , will also be considered.

The first issue of CIS will be devoted to: Italy in the Mediterranean.  The
call for papers and submission guidelines will be announced shortly and
posted on the ISMRG website: http://www.ihc.ucsb.edu/italianstudies/

Languages: Contributions can be in either English or Italian.

The first issue will go online in 2009.

Subsequent theme issues planned include: Italy and the Public Sphere;
Italian Soundscapes;  Translation Theory and Practice; The Mezzogiorno;
National vs. Regional Identities; Italian Futures.

The journal will be permanently archived by the California Digital Library
at http://repositories.cdlib.org/ismrg/cisj/
