Kingston University seeks to appoint a postdoctoral researcher to work on 
an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded project that will 
deliver a ‘Web-based Spatio-temporal Interpolator for Census Area 
Statistics’ as a demonstrator system. The GIS-based system will enable 
registered users of existing and future census related data resources to 
perform an integrated set of spatial analytic procedures in order to 
generate consistent spatial units spanning recent British censuses based 
on Census Output Area geography and associated estimates of census counts. 
The project has been funded under the ESRC/JISC Census Development 
Programme. The researcher will be based in the Centre for Earth and 
Environmental Sciences Research, School of Earth Sciences and Geography 
and work with Nigel Walford, Professor of Applied GIS.

The Research Associate is required to take charge of the project on a day-
to-day basis under the direction of the Principal Investigator; to be 
responsible for developing and programming the web-based demonstrator 
system; to collaborate with other project teams in the Census Development 
Programme and the Census Data Units; and to contribute to writing web 
pages and other dissemination activities.

The post would suit an experienced postdoctoral researcher and applicants 
should have a relevant postgraduate qualification, preferably a PhD or 
will have completed one before commencing the post. The researcher should 
have experience of programming with C++, ArcIMS, SQLServer or similar, 
sound knowledge of proprietary GIS software and good general ICT skills 
preferably with an interest in web-based GIS. The person should also have 
experience with digital census boundary data and statistics, and the 
application of relevant spatial analysis tools/techniques.
