It has become common in recent texts in philosophy of art and emotion to mention 'garden-variety' this or that (e.g. 'garden-variety emotions', 'garden-variety artifacts' ...). Can anyone explain the roots of this metaphoric characterization (where it comes from), and the meaning of it.
