Date: Thursday 26th June 2008; 10:00 – 17:00h
Venue: The Royal Society of Medicine, 1 Wimpole Street, London, W1G 0AE, UK

The EQUATOR Network (http://www.equator-network.org/) is a new
international initiative that aims to improve the reliability of scientific
publications by promoting transparent and accurate reporting of health
research. The project was initiated by an international group of leading
experts in the field of research methodology and reporting (Prof Douglas
Altman, Dr David Moher, Dr Kenneth Schulz, Dr John Hoey).

The EQUATOR Network will hold its official launch meeting ‘Achieving
Transparency in Reporting Health Research’ on 26 June. The meeting will
focus on better understanding of problems associated with health research
reporting and use of reporting guidelines and will discuss potential
solutions that can lead to the improvement of the health research
literature.
The highlight of the afternoon programme is 1st EQUATOR Annual
Lecture 'Meeting the research information needs of patients and clinicians
more effectively' presented by Sir Iain Chalmers.
The meeting will be of great interest to publishers and editors of medical
journals, peer reviewers, researchers, medical writers, representatives of
research funding bodies, developers of reporting guidelines, and
individuals involved in research education from universities, professional
societies and associations.

Pre-conference workshop ‘Key guidelines for reporting health research
studies’ on 25 June is aimed mainly at journal editors and peer-reviewers.
The workshop will provide an intensive overview of major scientific and
ethical issues relating to the quality of health research reporting. Key
reporting guidelines as well as examples of good and bad research reports
will be discussed. Information on how the EQUATOR Network can help editors
and peer reviewers will be presented.
