We use volunteers in much the same way, but we also have a volunteer mentor programme where an experienced volunteer will "buddy up" with a new user or someone with a disability (by appointment) to help them get started (usually with family history), find their way round our systems or access records. Through this we can provide the one to one help that some people need but which we don't otherwise have the resources to do. One volunteer also worked in this way with a group of lower ability students from a college in his own locality. The main drawback with this is we haven't managed to recruit enough volunteers with the confidence or interest in working in this way to provide a more comprehensive service, but it's something we'd like to expand. Currently volunteers are used for value added cataloguing, transcribing and inputting data onto laptops for later addition to our database. We are also developing a small outreach program and developing links with outside agencies. We would be interested to hear from any list members who run a successful volunteer program, with regard to the type of activities their volunteers are involved in. Many thanks for any input you feel you could give us. > Trudy Foster > > Archivist > Jersey Heritage Direct line: +44(0)1534 833375 Jersey Archive, Clarence Road, St Helier, Jersey JE2 4JY Tel: +44 (0)1534 8333xx Fax: +44 (0)1534 833301 Email: [log in to unmask] Jersey Heritage protects and promotes the Island's rich heritage and cultural environment.
