Details
The MRC SGDP Centre at the Institute of Psychiatry is seeking
appropriately qualified candidates for a key appointment as Research
Assistant in Statistical Genetics for the Depression GWAS study, funded by
an MRC-GSK grant (PI Peter McGuffin). This study will use genetic and
clinical information on individuals affected with unipolar depression and
controls to identify novel genes which control susceptibility to
depression. This provides an exciting opportunity to develop statistical
skills in an expanding research field. The successful applicant will be
responsible for the statistical analysis of genotype data within these
cohorts of unipolar depression cases, including (1) quality control (2)
analysis of the genome-wide association study, (3) detailed exploration of
phenotype-genotype correlations, (4) data-mining and bioinformatic
approaches to gene identification. The postholder will be part of the
Statistical Genetics Unit at KCL, and work closely with the database
manager and other members of the research team. The postholder will
therefore need a postdoctoral qualification (MSc/PhD) in statistics,
statistical genetics or a related discipline. They will be familiar with
statistical analysis techniques and the analysis of large data sets, with
previous experience in the analysis of genetic studies an asset. The
postholder will be motivated to perform this key role, have relevant past
experience, and good organisational and communication skills. The post is
available, full-time, for 18 months, from July 2008.
