Research Associate Opening Air Force Research Laboratory - Space Vehicles Directorate The AFRL Space Weather group located at Hanscom AFB near Boston, MA is seeking to hire a theoretical physical chemist to study chemical processes associated with cooling the atmosphere after a solar magnetic storm. The position calls for a highly motivated individual to conduct research in collisions involving electrons and atomic and molecular species as well as collisions involving N and O atoms with O2 and N2. Successful candidates will join the existing Space Weather program. Experience with atomic/molecular spectroscopy is also desirable. Note that the laboratory is scheduled to be moved to Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, NM in summer 2011, where a new state-of-the-art facility is being constructed adjacent to existing Space Vehicles Directorate facilities. It is anticipated that numerous federal appointments will become available in the next 18-36 months for AFRL researchers willing to relocate. Applicants must be US citizens. Prospective or recent (past five years) PhDs and more senior PhDs are typically initially hired into National Research Council (NRC) Postdoctoral and Senior Associateships, respectively. See http://www7.nationalacademies.org/rap/ <http://www7.nationalacademies.org/rap/> for a description of the NRC program stipend, benefits, and policies under the AFRL section. The submission package includes a modest-length proposal written in consultation with lab personnel, together with supporting documentation, with the next proposal due date being May 1. Interested candidates should contact Dr. Ramesh Sharma [log in to unmask]) for more information.
