medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Amgueddfa Werin Cymru - St Fagans: National History Museum

Notice of Conference: 'Interpreting the Medieval Past'
Saturday, 15th November 2008

Call for Papers

A one-day Conference will be held at St Fagans: National History Museum on Saturday 15th November 2008. The theme, 'Interpreting the Medieval Past', will explore ways of understanding and illustrating how and where people in Britain, but more especially in Wales, lived, worked and worshiped between circa.1200 AD and the Reformation. The recently re-erected St Teilo's Church will serve as a backcloth to the Conference and as an example of how informed academic research can be used to re-create a building from this period.

Papers are invited on subjects relating to the above. The emphasis should be on showing how aspects of medieval domestic and religious architecture, art, religion, liturgy, landscape and society can be researched and interpreted to a 21st century audience.

If you would like to submit a paper, please submit a short abstract (up to 200 words in length) to the address shown below, or by e-mail to: [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. The deadline for submissions is 30th May 2008, but earlier submissions will be accepted gratefully. Papers should not have been previously presented at any other scholarly meeting nor have been published. Participants will be allocated 30-minute slots, with between 20-25 minutes for the presentation and 5-10 minutes for questions and discussion. There will be a longer discussion period at the end of the day where some of the issues raised during the day will be aired. Papers presented will be published after the Conference in the form of on-line Transactions.

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you require further details of the Conference or if you have any problems meeting the above deadline. Also, please feel free to circulate this notice to any other interested parties. Attached is a provisional timetable for the one-day Conference.

Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
