Dear Mr Crowhurst,

Yes, tithe maps would be useful but only if they had their associated schedules attached and were of a sufficiently high quality to allow all the boundaries to be followed and the field numbers and other annotations to be read.  A very much more useful product would be these maps and schedules converted into GIS polygon layers, with the associated schedule data included as polygon attributes.

I would also note that you will be required to do significant amounts of research to provide accurate dating evidence for the tithe maps, as the date written on a particular tithe map copy may well not be the date at which the final map was completed and there may be several versions with later alterations – I have come across several tithe maps with railway land shown on them, even though the Act for the railway had not been passed at the date written on the map and schedule – and this was only the most obvious and easily checked update.  You may recall you have a similar problem with your so-called ‘first edition’ OS 1:10,560 county series mapping for Lancashire, which was not published on the dates you quote on your ‘Old Map’ web pages and in your Enviro-Check product, but is in fact a later revision with many significant differences between it and the real first edition maps.  Other staff may recall that I have pointed this out to your firm a number of times over the last ten years, to no obvious effect.

Yours

Subject: Geo-referenced Tithe Maps - Landmark Information Group

Posted on behalf of Landmark Information Group

Dear HER Officer,

As you will be aware Landmark Information Group Limited, in partnership with Ordnance Survey, has created the digital archive of Historical OS Mapping dating from 1840 to 1996 at scales ranging from 1:500 to 1:10 000. We have recently added GOAD Fire Insurance Plans & Soviet maps to this collection and all of these are available as data under licence.

We are always looking to add map data and are currently in detailed discussions regarding Tithe mapping. We will be providing geo-referenced mapping alongside a database of the apportionments - as licensed data and/or an online facility. Feedback from officers at various local authorities have convinced me that Tithe maps may be a useful addition to our portfolio of map data - particularly with regards to the new Heritage Bill and land characterisation.

We are still at an early stage and there will be some time before we could provide the data - but we would be interested to know whether these may be useful to HER's throughout the UK. Obviously, I'm not looking for a "yes, we would want to order immediately" and appreciate that much will depend on costs & budgets but any feedback at this stage would be much appreciated! It would influence how we prepare and plan to deliver the data.

I must add that this is commercially sensitive and would request that this is not discussed beyond this forum; your assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Best wishes

Rick
