Maria Sibylla Merian, Common or spectacled caimen and South American false coral snake, c.1705-10

In the years around 1500, a series of great voyages rapidly expanded European knowledge of the world. In the centuries that followed, countless species of animals and plants were brought back to Europe by explorers and traders, leading to a new awareness of the natural riches of the world. The exhibition, Amazing Rare Things, examines the work of five artists and a collector who attempted to record and understand the natural world - from Leonardo da Vinci, intensively studying the structure of plants in fifteenth century Italy; via Maria Sibylla Merian, sailing with her daughter to the rain forests of South America in 1699; to Mark Catesby, exploring the indigenous flora and fauna of the British colonies in North America in the eighteenth century. This introductory lecture will look at the astonishing variety and dedication of their work.

The lecture (approximately 45 minutes), from Martin Clayton, Deputy Curator of the Print Room, is followed by a private view of the exhibition.
