To: DCMI Accessibility Community

All,

Following recent activity around the mapping of the ISO PNP/DRD to
Dublin Core I want to make the list aware of current work in the EU4ALL
project (http://www.eu4all-project.eu).

Among many other things the EU4ALL project is developing an approach to
Content Personalisation for accessibility that is responsive both to
Device Descriptions and User Profiles. We think we are the first
project worldwide to do this and it has already been identified by our
sponsors the European Commission as a key innovative contribution of the
project. The approach taken is to in effect create an integrated
Application Profile of CC/PP, PNP and DRD. This work is already
complete at the information model level.

We are currently working on the binding issues. The Open University is
charged with developing the first version of the RDF binding of the
PNP/DRD elements by 16 May (a RDF binding of CC/PP already exists). We
will be working openly sharing the approach for comment with all
relevant communities including IMS and ISO and as now seems important
and timely DC.

The RDF binding to be produced by the 16 May deadline will not be a
complete binding of PNP/DRD but could be the basis of an approach for
subsequent further development and incorporation into standards of the
relevant standards bodies. We are taking an incremental approach and
will be binding the elements required to enable the behaviours of our
early prototypes (which are due in a few months time). Further
development of the binding will take place within the project after we
have validated the partial approach in the integration of our early
prototypes. I think this implementation and evaluation work is vital to
iron out issues and to be able to sell the approach more widely.
Generally I think the lack of prototypes of interim proposals has been a
weakness in past AccessForAll work and now we have a funded opportunity
to address that at this stage.

This effort will probably be of use to those working in the same area
within DC and we can freely make it available. I hope we can harmonise
the efforts and jointly promote uptake and interoperability.

Please feel free to contact me to indicate an interest, ask questions or
pass on relevant information.

Cheers,

Martyn
