National Cataloguing Grants Programme for Archives
The National Archives is delighted to announce that the Cataloguing Grants Scheme 2008 is now open to applications from archive-holding institutions, following a successful pilot phase in 2006-07. A group of charitable funders have come together to provide a total of £335,000 funding to tackle cataloguing backlogs in 2008, with further annual rounds in the coming years. The National Archives undertakes administration and assessment of the scheme, while the final decisions on the allocation of grants are made by an independent Cataloguing Grants Panel.

In the pilot phase, annual rounds were restricted to certain regions and nations, as available funds were relatively limited. To offer equal opportunity to all areas of the country, in 2008 £200,000 (a sum equal to that available in previous rounds) is ring-fenced for those which have not yet had an opportunity to apply: Wales, Yorkshire and the Humber, the West Midlands, South East, and East of England. The remaining funding is available to applicants regardless of their geographical location, including the five areas which benefit from ring-fenced funding. From 2009, the scheme will be fully open to applicants from all UK regions and nations on an equal footing. We therefore recommend that applicants from outside the specified regions should consider carefully before submitting applications in the 2008 round.

The scheme operates a two-stage application process. This involves a preliminary stage in which applicants briefly explain the importance of the collection(s) proposed for cataloguing, and how they prioritised this above other uncatalogued material. Those who progress to the second phase will then be invited to submit a more detailed application, including a full project plan and precise costs. The deadline for first stage applications is 13 June 2008. For detailed guidelines and a phase one application form, see http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/archives/cataloguing_grants_scheme.htm. The National Cataloguing Grants Programme for Archives will now run on an annual basis until 2012. This has been made possible by the generous support of the Pilgrim Trust, the Wolfson Foundation, the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, the Mercers Company Charitable Foundation,  the Goldsmiths Company and the Foyle Foundation. We have so far secured over £1.5million to tackle archive cataloguing backlogs and continue to seek additional funding partners to sustain and develop this national programme.
