Abstract:
Medical statisticians are usually employed either within an academic or
a pharmaceutical industry environment. I will describe my personal
experiences of working in both settings, and make some comparisons
between them, with respect both to the types of statistical work and
other aspects of the working culture.

Speaker:
Stephen has been working as Senior Statistician at the Medical Research
Council's Epidemiology Unit in Cambridge since August 2006. Completing
an MSc in Medical Statistics at the London School of Hygiene and
Tropical Medicine, he worked as a Research Fellow and Lecturer in the
same institution for a further 5 years, before moving into the
pharmaceutical industry. In his career to date he has worked as a
statistician in a variety of different disease areas, including
diabetes, obesity, HIV, infectious diseases, cardiovascular disease and
asthma. He is interested in all aspects of statistical methodology for
clinical trials and epidemiology.
