We've seen a huge increase in numbers here at Guys - probably a 10 fold increase and, significantly, the majority are positive. A few weeks ago, we were analyzing ethylene glycols every day of the week, occasionally up to 7 different samples per day. Its certainly keeping us busy at the moment, as if we didn't have enough to do! Michael ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------- Further to Jonathan Kay's email re. the "Antifreeze" case, I'm delighted to report that our first Ethylene Glycol overdose for many years presented at 10:30 on Thursday morning. Despite having apparently drunk about 700 ml of it he seems to be reasonably well at present. He had an osmolar gap of well over 20 mosmol/L and his Glycol level was 2g/L. Dialysis is recommended at >0.5 g/l. However, as he appeared well, dialysis was not carried out and he was treated with fomepizole. Appears to have survived very well and was transferred from ICU to the ward yesterday. Will keep you updated if anything further of interest arises. How many people do EtOH levels by a non-GC (i.e. enzymatic) method? As we don't it couldn't be monitored regularly which is why he received fomepizole rather than EtOH infusion.
