Hi Sylvia,

I think that there is some uncertainty about the introduction of rabbits
now. Hasn't someone fairly recently found butchered rabbit in Roman
contexts? Sorry I don't have any references to this but if anyone does
have more information, or can confirm that Roman rabbits are an
unfounded rumour I would also be interested.

Subject: [ZOOARCH] rabbits and hares in Britain

Dear All

Just after an update on the introduction of rabbits and hares to
Britain.

My understanding is that

The mountain hare Lepus timidus

printNamePage&accountref=987&NAMEID=31365&backtolisttype=search&searchli
stvalue=artic%20hare> is that the only true British native lagomorph.

The brown hare Lepus europaeus
<http://internt.nhm.ac.uk/jobj/runjava.jobj?java=ctol.CTOLServer&method=
printNamePage&accountref=987&NAMEID=1150&backtolisttype=search&searchlis
tvalue=artic%20hare>  being a ?Roman introduction.

And the rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus
<http://internt.nhm.ac.uk/jobj/runjava.jobj?java=ctol.CTOLServer&method=
printNamePage&accountref=987&NAMEID=1436&backtolisttype=search&searchlis
tvalue=rabbit>  being a Norman introduction.

Many Thanks and Happy Easter

Sylvia
