Hi Charlotte

I was involved in implementing waterbirth in a
hospital. The main resistance was from midwives not
obs. Their main concerns were 'doing nothing' during
the birth of the baby (perineum, nuchal cord, traction
etc). Other concerns included:

*isolation - having to stay in the pool room at the
end of the corridor at all times rather than chatting
at the desk
*mess - when transferring from pool to bed afterwards
*hassle - filling and maintaining the pool, cleaning
afterwards
*concerns about emergency situations
*the baby remaining blue for longer - slower
transition and not sure when to intervene

Eventually after watching waterbirths and being
supported whilst doing them some mw became fans and
would suggest the pool to women. However, the majority
did not change their practice and would not suggest
the pool unless the woman asked.

In terms of research - maybe look at how midwives
develop skills / practice ie. tradition and
experience. Reluctance to try something unfamiliar
etc.
Good luck
Rachel
