Tom: you may be interested in a brief study I made of the development of the rite of religious profession in W.G. East, This Body of Death: Abelard, Heloise and the Religious Life, in "Medieval Theology and the Natural Body" edited by Peter Biller and A.J. Minnis, York Medieval Press 1997. The assumption underlying the cases I mention would be that they took place during Mass, and therefore in the church.
