Leiden, 11 March 2008 Dear List members, This is to let you know that a combined volume containing Nos. 53-54 of al-Mawsem has just appeared. The periodical al-Mawsem was founded some twenty years ago by Muhammad Said al-Katib al-Tureihi, who has been editing this interesting publication till today. Mr. Al-Tureihi is a leading Shia intellectual from Iraq, member of a family of scholars and litterati. In the course of 1991 he was forced to go into exile and he found refuge in the Netherlands. He has since then founded the Kufa Academy, which acts as the publisher of al-Mawsem. Al-Mawsem treats all aspects of Shia life in the world of Islam, not only of the Shia in Iran which in the press tends to get a disproportionate amount of attention. It is in fact a much larger world, which is rich of tradition and scholarship. The present double number of Al-Mawsem is a Memorial Volume for the editor's father, Sheikh Muhammad Kazim al-Tureihi, who died in exile in Denmark in 2002. It is an interesting volume in several respects. It not only documents Sheikh Al-Tureihi's life and work, but it also illustrates, by the numerous important memoirs and contributions, the network of Iraq's cultural elite of the second half of the twentieth century. Practical details: Al-Mawsem 1326/2004, Nos. 53-54 488 pp. Text mainly in Arabic, richly illustrated.
