POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP AT THE MINERAL EXPLORATION RESEARCH CENTRE, LAURENTIAN UNIVERSITY, CANADA

Structure and Stratigraphy of the Trout Lake VMS deposit, Manitoba

The Trout Lake VMS deposit occurs within the Paleoproterozoic Flin Flon greenstone belt in the Trans-Hudson Orogen. It is a strongly sheared and imbricated deposit that has never been previously studied. The structural and stratigraphic setting of the deposit is unknown with respect to the main VMS deposits in Flin Flon. Whether the deposit occupies the same stratigraphic horizon or is stratigraphically lower down or higher up than the present-producer Triple Seven and Callinan deposits has significant implications for models that are being developed for the structural and volcanic evolution of the Flin Flon district and Trans Hudson. The Trout Lake mine project will involve detailed underground structural and stratigraphic mapping of the deposit and 3D reconstruction of the deposit using mine level plans and cross sections as well as available drill cores. Major and trace element geochemistry of the volcanic rocks will be done to understand their petrogenesis, constrain their stratigraphy, and compare their stratigraphy to that of other Flin Flon deposits. Detrital zircons in interleaved sedimentary rocks will be dated using the laser ablation ICPMS at Laurentian University. The textures and microstructures of deformed sulphide and silicate minerals will be analyzed under the SEM and optical microscope to characterize their flow regime and kinematics. The study promises interesting new results on the deformation of VMS deposits in general and on the structural and stratigraphic setting of the deposit in the Flin Flon mining camp.
