although not exactly an academic study, Kafka's story of the guy waiting in front of a doorman for a considerable period of his life (in fact until he dies there), could perhaps be a good illustration of the politics of waiting; i don't know if the story appears in Kafka's book 'The Trial' but it certainly appears in the 1962 Orson Welles adaptation of the book
