Cheers we have a similar MSI to install the latest version via group polices. A Single batch file running via a WIWW msi, that does as you mentioned merge some reg keys and a silent install. The reason we have a version in the image is that we can connect to a freshly imaged machine remotely prior to being joined to the domain, although most of the time we set the imaging to join the machine to the domain automatically. The first writes the necessary registry keys so that the password is set for the service and the second uses the Windows Installer Wrapper Wizard (http://www.vinsvision.com/Articles/tabid/66/EntryID/15/Default.aspx) to run a silent install of VNC. I did the first bit because I hadn't twigged how to add the registry entries using an MSI on its own; I suspect you could do it with just one MSI with a bit of playing :-) Steve -----Original Message----- From: Support issues for windows in UK HE & FE [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Tim Wiser Sent: 04 February 2008 10:37 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: Supplementary question re delivery of applications to student desktops When I was looking after this task my XP image (built on very basic hardware, tweaked, sysprepped and then Ghosted) only contained the basic OS with SP2, a load of drivers plus a couple of packages that were very tricky to deploy using MSIs - such as VNC. I think the image was about 1.8Gb. This blew onto a decent spec box in about 5 mins over a 100Mb link. Patches were deployed via WSUS and other apps were deployed afterwards using Active Directory. That stage was the bit that took the time but I was only installing a handful of machines at a time so it wasn't a problem. I found that deploying apps before imaging led to issues when it came to updating or removing those apps through AD. Tim.
