When I was looking after this task my XP image (built on very basic
hardware, tweaked, sysprepped and then Ghosted) only contained the basic
OS with SP2, a load of drivers plus a couple of packages that were very
tricky to deploy using MSIs - such as VNC. I think the image was about
1.8Gb. This blew onto a decent spec box in about 5 mins over a 100Mb
link. Patches were deployed via WSUS and other apps were deployed
afterwards using Active Directory. That stage was the bit that took the
time but I was only installing a handful of machines at a time so it
wasn't a problem. I found that deploying apps before imaging led to
issues when it came to updating or removing those apps through AD.

Tim.

Subject: Re: Supplementary question re delivery of applications to
student desktops

Our XP images are just over 1Gb, Vista images are just over 2gb using
Imagex, these are slightly smaller (about 600Mb) than our old Ghost XP
images.

Very little is added to the vanilla install, extra drivers, VNC, few
tweaks. All applications are delivered when joined to the domain.
