Target Audience: Lecturers and tutors of all subjects who are interested in knowing more about the use of peer assessment within groupwork and how it could be used within their teaching.

Provenance Melanie Bates is the Learning Technology Co-ordinator at Engineering Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and Project Manager for the JISC-funded WebPA project. Steve Loddington is the Research Associate and Nicola Wilkinson is the e-Learning Systems Developer. The project is carrying out research to develop an online peer assessment system – namely WebPA.

Description

This session will provide an introduction to peer assessment within groupwork and the associated potential advantages and challenges. WebPA will be demonstrated as one method of weighting individual marks, based on contribution to group work. A number of WebPA use cases will be shown highlighting the steps taken in relation to setting, running and marking of online assessments. Participants will be given an opportunity to use the WebPA demonstrator from the tutor and student perspectives. Ways in which WebPA could be used within the participants’ teaching will be explored. Participants will be encouraged to discuss their perceptions and/or experiences of using peer assessment within groupwork and in using WebPA during the session.

Objectives

Participants will;
  • know the benefits and potential challenges of peer assessment from academic and student perspectives; 
  • see WebPA in it’s entirety from the creation of new assessments through to the marking of the assessment and generation of individual scores; 
  • have used the WebPA demonstrator from both the tutor and student perspectives;
  • know more about the WebPA project and how use start using WebPA within their teaching.
