Today, as I shivered
in a courtroom as
jury foreman, the town
recorded 41.5 Celsius.

As I travelled home
on a packed train,
I saw the frazzled faces
of my fellow citizens.

The TV news tonight
reported failing
hospital systems and teachers' strikes,
child abuse and unlawful
carnal knowledge of a minor
by a person of authority.

The good news is
tomorrow will only be 37
and I'll be leading a mob
away from lynching.
I can't make a poem out of this,
so I offer you cut-up prose,
flat as a dried-out lake bed
