Gail

Don’t worry most aren’t that receptive, just the very odd few who know me anyway from either being my GP or having worked with me at some point when I worked in a GP Practice.

Lots don’t actually know what OH is, so don’t appreciate what I do or my qualification ‘I’m only a Nurse’, attitude unfortunately.

I also cover Jersey and unfortunately there I think a lot of the GP’s believe they already do OH but none actually follow any HSE Guidance or OH Standards, so actually see me coming in as a threat to their livelihood, instead of seeing it as an additional benefit for their patients, I’ve already gained a couple of good contacts there who are interested in OH and admit they value my advise as I am qualified in OH.

So I would say it’s probably luck that some GP’s actually contact me, and also I have found that sometimes a courtesy call or letter to let them know about their patients return to work may also help, I know it’s additional paperwork but it has worked on the odd occasion to harbour good will and working partnerships.

It maybe that I have the benefit or not, that I work in a much closer community setting than a lot of OH Professionals. That also has it’s pitfalls as well!

Kind regards

Clare

Hi Clare
I was very interested in your description of how you and your local GPs are working together. I have been trying to get our local GPs to work with me and vice versa but have had zero response !! (you may have read a previous email regarding this on Jiscmail!)
What did you do to foster this relationship in the first place - I obviously failed in the my initial approach and would be willing to try another tact that has been successful elsewhere
Kind regards
Gail

It has made a great deal of difference over here in Guernsey since the forms have been changed.

I’ve had a couple of GP’s who have phoned me to ask if I know what an individual  does as a job, if they work for instance as a  labourer on a road gang, which meant the GP’s were happy for the individuals to return to work on restricted duties, which I arranged with their employers, rather than what their GP’s may normally do, which is sign the individual off work, and then Occ health ends up getting them back to work anyway, with concerns from the individual that their GP will be annoyed that OH has over ruled the decision. This way all involved has a stake in that individual returning to work and the GP knows what actual information is required of them, this can also save time and cost for the employer as we won’t necessarily need to write to the GP to get further information, and the individual can be back at work imediately.
