The emphasis of the course is on the development of practical
research skills for application in the NHS and Community Care fields. Principal
themes include research design, the assembly, handling, and analysis of data.
The course includes five facilitated computer laboratory sessions in which we
introduce some electronic methods of handling and analysing data (SPSS and
Epi-Info* for quantitative research, and WinMax for qualitative data).
Participants will also have the opportunity to carry out computing and internet
assignments individually, using on-campus facilities. As well as introducing and
practising some of the IT skills needed for research, the course looks at a
range of feasibility and research design issues drawn from ‘real-world’
contemporary research activities in order to develop the conceptual and
intellectual aspects of the research process. Themes explored by staff of the
Department of Health and Human Sciences and guest speakers include the
research/practice interface, ethical issues in research design, and strategies
for gaining further research training and funding.
