medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

To me it looks like the white piece next to the bishop’s head is a modern (?) replacement of a lost fragment of this glass. Originally it probably showed the curl of the crozier in pigment painted and burned on the glass.

At risk of showing my ignorance, could anyone tell me what 'the bishop or abbot in green in the upper left the window of the church of St. Mary Magdelene in Norfolk' is holding?  It looks like a garden spade.
