Hi Clare

After seeing your posting I contacted the Health Sciences and Practice
Subject Centre of the Higher Education Academy, as I thought they would
be likely to know, having a good handle on accessibility issues in the
teaching of health sciences. I have just had the following response from
them:

I have received the following from one of our nursing/midwifery
advisers:

"I am unaware that the NMC has issued any guidance that is that
specific, as described in the first e-mail. In 2007 the NMC issued
Guidance on good health and good character, (available on the NMC
website) where the student would be viewed on an individual basis and
where 'reasonable', adjustments made to support her practice. The
student must be able to achieve the NMC competencies and in the case of
listening to the fetal heart there are a variety of other means that can
be used, rather than a pinnard stethoscope.

I hope this might be of some help to your original enquirer

So it looks like we have differing information about what the NMC is
actually saying on this issue. I don't suppose anyone on this list has
access to the NMC and can find out for certain what the position is
please?

Many thanks

Subject: Re: Midwifery course and a hearing impaired student

Has anyone dealt with a 'fitness to practice' issue for hearing impaired
midwifery students regarding use of the Pinnard foetal stethoscope? I
understand that the new Nursing & Midwifery Council professional
standards 2007 specify that all students MUST be able to use a Pinnard,
use of an electronic stethoscope is not viewed as an alternative.
